2026 Foundations Reading Plan

Welcome to Week 27 of the Foundations F260 Bible Reading Plan!

Zechariah’s book begins with the reminder that sin and rebellion are what led Zechariah’s people into exile from their land and broke their communion with God. That is a biblical theme established with the account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). If you are reading with our Summer Book Clubs the book Remember and Rehearse: An Invitation to Participate in God’s Story, you’ve been challenged to see that God created the world to bring His kingdom to earth. As author J.T. English compellingly articulates, God established His kingdom through creation, which included creating a people and a perfect place for us to enjoy Him in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1). Their sin against a holy God sent them into exile - no perfect garden, no perfect relationship with God, and their purpose of enjoying God and ruling and reigning as reflections of Him was severely compromised. The rest of the Bible is about God reestablishing His kingdom on earth.

As Zechariah’s people are leaving their literal exile (a fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy (Jeremiah 25), he implores them to return to God as well as the homeland He had given them. The final chapters in Zechariah point to the future messianic kingdom when Jesus first came to earth (9:9; 12:10) and to God’s final and eternal earthly kingdom when He will return for us (8:3; 14). We really are living in the middle of God’s story!

Our reading in Ezra this week speaks of a second group of exiles returning to Jerusalem. While trying to lead the people in spiritual renewal, Ezra succumbs to the leaders’ desire that he encourage the exiles to divorce spouses not following God - something never commanded by God then or in the future (Malachi 2:13-`16; Matthew 19:6; 1 Corinthians 7:12-14).

The book of Esther also happens after the Babylonian exile, but concerns Jews that stayed in Persia instead of returning to their homeland. It is such a compelling and unique book in the Bible, one of only two that are named after a woman.. As The Bible Project explains, “The book of Esther asks us to trust in God’s providence even when we can’t see it working” (https://bibleproject.com/guides/book-of-esther/). That is as timely a message for us today as it was to its original hearers! Where do you need to trust Him this week? With what areas or circumstances in your life? Invest some time this week in reminding yourself of who God is and what He has promised, as well as in talking and listening to Him. He is at work in your life!
