Special Guest Speaker -Lawrence Oseje, Ph.D.

He is the assistant professor for the Regent University School of Divinity in Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in Interreligious Studies from Africa International University. In addition to being adjunct faculty at Regent, he is currently the Executive Director of Destiny Impact Mission International and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology and Biblical Studies at Kabarak University.

He is a Langham Scholar, chairman of Africa Scholarship Exchange, ASE-Kenya, and an Academy Fellow for International Council for Evangelical Education, ICETE. He has served at Africa International University, AIU, Pac University, and as a lecturer in Uganda Christian University in Islamic Studies. Dr. Oseje is an expert on Christianity on the African continent and is passionate about proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all people and especially with Muslims. He is married to Dorcas and they have three children. Welcome to Council Road, Dr. Oseje!

This Sunday's Scripture:  Matthew 16 and Acts 8
The Persecution of the Church

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Acts 8:1-3
And Saul approved of their killing him.

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.

Our Celebrate Recovery ministry is beginning Kingdom Son Worship Nights every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Chapel. It is for the men in the Kingdom Son transitional discipleship ministry house that Council Road members are helping to fill with supplies. It will be a place for the men to come and experience Christ's love for them. People who support this ministry as well as other men who have experienced prison and are now living a Christ-centered life will be in attendance. After the 6 p.m. fellowship, we will have praise and worship followed by teaching or testimonies from a volunteer pastor or fellow ex-offender who is now dedicated to Christ-centered living. We will end the evening with praise, success stories and prayer requests. Fellowship will follow until 8 p.m. This is essential for men who have just gotten out of prison and are trying to live and learn Christ-centered living. Contact Ricky Z if you have questions.

THE LANDING

WHAT IS THE LANDING? The Landing is a Christ-centered environment for 6 - 12th grade students to be honest and open about their hurts, habits, and hang ups. It’s Celebrate Recovery for students! Whether addictions like alcohol, or pornography, scars from the past like abuse or trauma, or ongoing battles with insecurities and fears, we believe the plan for growth is the same. We lead students through the Biblically based 12 steps by encouraging them to acknowledge and confess sin, make amends where needed, and continue to grow and give back. The Landing is a place to be real, and to find real hope in a God whose redemptive power can overcome any struggle. HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT MAKE THE LANDING SO EXCITING: It’s experience based. Instead of students learning in a lecture format, they get involved with the lessons. They’ll write, draw, talk, move, answer questions and much more. It’s 52 weeks and it never stops. Just like Celebrate Recovery, The Landing goes all year long. Our hurts, habits and hang-ups don’t take a break so neither do we! The lessons are based on the Celebrate Recovery lessons. Students will experience lessons like, Denial, Forgiveness, Spiritual Inventory, and all of the 25 Celebrate Recovery lessons in ways that apply directly to them. It has 22 high quality videos from our partners The Skit Guys and Igniter Media. Students will write out their inventories and their testimonies.

5:45 p.m. free dinner in Maroney Hall
6:30 p.m. large group and worship time in Chapel
7:30 p.m. students meet in Room 200 for the Landing
9 p.m. dessert time in Maroney Hall

Students will write out their inventories and their testimonies

This Sunday's Scripture:  Philippians 2:1-4

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Students will write out their inventories and their testimonies

Kingdom Son Worship Night

10:30a Worship Service

Service starts at 10:30 a.m. Keep in mind, if you’re wanting to drop off your child at Worship Care, you’ll want to come at least 15 minutes early.

This Sunday's Scripture:  Philippians 2:12-18

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
